The Aztec Calendar, also known as the Sun Stone, is one of the most iconic artifacts of the Mexican (Aztec) civilization. This massive stone disc was carved in the 15th century and visually represents the complex understanding of time and the cosmos held by the Aztecs. It was discovered in 1790 during excavations in Mexico City and is currently displayed at the National Museum of Anthropology.

At the center of the stone is the sun god, Tonatiuh, depicted with a fierce expression, symbolizing the power of the sun. Surrounding Tonatiuh are the representations of the five eras or "suns" that, according to Aztec mythology, had existed up to that point. The Aztecs believed that the world had been destroyed and recreated four times, and the current era was under the "Fifth Sun." Around the disc are glyphs representing the 20 days of the tonalpohualli calendar. On the outermost ring are two fire serpents that entwine, symbolizing the infinite nature of time and the eternal cycle.

While the Aztec Calendar is often thought to have served an astronomical function, its primary purpose was more symbolic and ceremonial. The Sun Stone is not only a masterpiece of Aztec sculpture but also a visual map of their universe and their perception of time as an ongoing, sacred cycle.

The design is a very traditional pattern in Talavera. It is called “plumeado”, because it resembles small feathers (or “plumas” in Spanish). Plumeados come in many different interpretations, mostly in cobalt blue, and they were used to fill the spaces between repetitive patterns. Talavera flourished during the Baroque era and designs were filled with different motives and the intention was not to leave blank spaces. The latin expression “horror vacui” describes this art concept as an aversion of empty spaces, “plumeados” were the favorite pattern used in Talavera to decorate and balance the design.

The trays are handpainted using mule hair brushes and our own mineral pigments (cobalt blue in this particular case) elaborated in our 200 year old workshop following the traditional technique.

Immediately afterwards, the flowers are engraved, integrating the seeds to form abstract flowers, thus achieving the details necessary for an engraving of great quality. Finally, thicker lines were added to outline the sheets of paper. The bouquets, completing the engraving of the jug.
